Do you know that feeling when heading over to the barn for a night check and the batteries of the flashlight finally ran out? And no replacement on hand? Or you can not find the * in the corner of the the tack room because it is simply too dark?

Well, almost six years ago, the Sony Ericsson W810i brought light into the tricky tasks of my live: The white LED of the flash could be used as a flashlight. Not only for that simple, but ingenious, feature, this is still my phone! Still first battery and no issues. It has probably being riding more horses than most other phones. Six years and still going strong.

Hubby, of course, tried to get me into smartphones. Until he was tired hearing the same questions:

• “Does it have a flashlight functionality?”
• “How is the size? Does it fit into the small pocket of my riding breeches?”

Until the iPhone 4 his answers were “not convincing”. The iPhone 4 has an app – I believe. But still not small enough and far too sensitive for our dusty environment.

Hubby, again, sent some links showing the following features:

• Water- and dust-resistant
• Wet-finger tracking
• Gear kit with, for example, an arm case and wrist strap
• etc., etc.
• “Flash / light type – LED”

...is announced in the Camera specification. Wonder, if it works independently?

The size?

Sounds already good to me! It is scheduled to be available in Q3/2011. Price not yet announced.

Now, this is the point when I started seeing applications!

How about using the Xperia™ active for attaching equine “fitness equipment”? For monitoring the vitals when rehabbing horses? Horses that need to be conditioned very carefully due to heart, lung problems, for example. Or eventers that are already fit and conditioned, but that show in a very different climate than their body is used to?!

My vision: The Xperia™ active attached to the rider’s arm using the arm case and connected via ANT+ to the horses’ monitoring device. Can you see it, too?!
